PRESIDENT BARROW WITNESSES DOUMBOUYA'S INAUGURATION IN GUINEA

The President-elect of Guinea, General Mamadi Doumbouya, was sworn in during a ceremony held in the capital, Conakry. The event was attended by eight African leaders, including His Excellency Adama Barrow, the President of The Gambia, as well as thousands of ordinary Guineans.Doumbouya was elected earlier this month in an election contested by eight other candidates, securing nearly 87% of the vote. This marks a new beginning for the West African nation of 15 million, which has been under military rule since 2021.Guineans from all walks of life filled the 50,000-capacity Sekou Toure Stadium for the swearing-in of President-elect Mamadi Doumbouya. Several African leaders, including Adama Barrow of The Gambia, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Basirou Diomaye Jakhar Faye of Senegal, General Assimi Goita of Mali, and Muhammed Sheikh Ould Gazzouani of Mauritania, attended the historic ceremony.General Mamadi Doumbouya, a former military officer who won the presidential election, arrived at the stadium in a military vehicle, dressed in a flowing white kaftan. As he ascended to the VIP pavilion, his mother greeted him with a warm embrace, symbolising his transition from military to civilian life.The 36-year-old former army general observed as military vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, and rocket launchers paraded through the stadium, while military helicopters flew overhead to celebrate the occasion, which was marked by pomp and pageantry.Doumbouya then descended to the centre of the stadium, where a specially prepared stage was set up for the formal ceremony. The President of the Supreme Court, Fode Bangura, validated the election results, confirming Doumbouya’s commanding lead over his opponents.With his right hand raised and his left on the Holy Book, General Mamadi Doumbouya took the prescribed oaths. He swore to uphold the Constitution, perform the duties of President in the interest of the state, safeguard national unity, and defend the territorial integrity and independence of Guinea.He was subsequently awarded the nation's highest honour, the National Order of Merit with the Grand Croix, officially marking the start of his term as the second democratically elected President of Guinea and the seventh Head of State since independence from France in 1958.In his address to the nation, Doumbouya described this historic milestone as a new beginning for the country. He expressed gratitude to his compatriots for granting him the mandate to lead and promised to work towards improving the lives of Guineans, addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by the nation, and enhancing Guinea’s role in regional, continental, and global affairs.His inauguration concludes nearly five years of military rule, during which Guinea was suspended from ECOWAS and the African Union. The presence of sub-regional leaders may signal that Guinea, under General Mamadi Doumbouya, will regain its standing in both organisations and restore democracy in the country.After the swearing-in ceremony, President Adama Barrow returned to Banjul. He was seen off at the Sekou Touré International Airport by Ambassador Amie Fabureh and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Morissanda Kouyaté.

BARROW JOINS AFRICAN LEADERS FOR GUINEA'S TRANSITION TO CIVILIAN RULE 

President Adama Barrow has arrived in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, to attend the inauguration of President-elect General Mamadi Doumbouya. Doumbouya won a landslide victory in the recent presidential election, which followed more than four years of military rule. President Barrow is joining eight other African leaders for this ceremony, marking the end of the transitional period.Upon arrival at Sekou Toure International Airport, President Barrow was welcomed by Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs Morissanda Kouyaté, Gambia's Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau (also accredited to Guinea) Amie Fabureh, and the Consul General in Conakry, Muhammed Lamin Ceesay.Outside the presidential lounge at the airport, members of the Gambian community in Conakry greeted the President, waving the Gambian flag. The President will attend the inauguration ceremony of General Mamadi Doumbouya, the former military ruler, who secured nearly 87% of the vote in the presidential election.Eight other African heads of state have been invited to the official ceremony, which will take place at the National Stadium in Conakry, symbolising the end of the transitional period following the military coup in 2021.

PRESIDENT BARROW INSPECTS KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS 

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, recently conducted a familiarisation tour of infrastructural projects within the Kanifing Municipality and the West Coast Region. The tour included visits to various sites, such as Phase 3 of the OIC road projects, the Brufut Banyaka road project, and the Gunjur Jambanjelly road project, culminating in a visit to the Banjul Ports Project.The President began his tour with a brief stop at the Bertil Harding Highway. Phase 3 of this project is contracted to Arezki, which has completed the subgrade and subbase works, while base works and the relocation of services are currently ongoing.Accompanied by the Minister of Works, Ebrima Sillah, and officials from the National Roads Authority, the President was guided through the area around Palma Rima Junction. He received updates from project contractors regarding the status of the works, assessed their progress, and urged them to meet the stipulated deadlines.The entourage then travelled to the 7 km Sukuta Nemasu to Latrikunda road, which is part of the OIC road projects. This road is viewed as a critical corridor connecting the densely populated areas of the West Coast and Kanifing Municipality. Residents welcomed the President with enthusiasm, expressing their appreciation for this life-changing initiative.Following a lengthy trek with local residents, the President's motorcade continued through the Lot 5 EPC road, connecting Wellingara to the Abuko Abattoir. This 4 km road links the two settlements to the main road leading to Old Yundum.After a three-and-a-half-hour drive, the President made a brief stop at the Old Yundum overpass, where he was greeted by community leaders and supporters who gathered in large numbers to express gratitude for these unprecedented infrastructural developments.The President proceeded to inspect further road projects, stopping next at the EPC Lot 6 road project. The first section of this project stretches from Youna to Jambur and Brikama through Jalangbang, covering nearly 14 km. This road connects previously isolated communities that were especially cut off during the rainy season.After reaching the main Sukuta Jambanjelly highway, President Barrow made another brief stop to inspect the road connecting Jambur to Tujereng. The entourage then travelled to Kombo East to see ongoing works on the strategic EPC Lot 4 road project, which links Giboro and Sohm villages. This 13 km road has seen the contractor complete 1 km of the base course, following the successful removal of topsoil.The President was informed that works are progressing as planned, with sections outside the community currently at the subgrade and subbase level. From Kombo East, the entourage returned south to inspect the Janbanjelly-Gunjur road. Unlike other road projects, this one is significantly behind schedule, which left the President disappointed.However, the President expressed satisfaction with the completion of the Kunkujang Madiana to Brufut road, which spans 9 km. As he drove through, he stopped occasionally to greet the people who lined the roads to cheer for him. This was the first time the President had driven on these roads since laying the foundation stone, and he was visibly impressed with the transformation the projects had brought to Brufut and its surrounding areas.The tour concluded in Banjul with a visit to the port, where a new management team under a Turkish company has already initiated tangible improvements at the country’s only seaport. The President expressed his satisfaction with the work of Albayrak, the management company, which has made substantial investments to expand and modernise the port facilities.Overall, President Barrow deemed the tour very successful, as it provided him with firsthand information on these and other projects currently being undertaken by his government. He emphasised his commitment to infrastructural development, arguing that it is the foundation of national growth.Additionally, he pledged to transform The Gambia into a middle-income country by 2031, asserting that, after a decade in office, he has gained the experience necessary to implement impactful developments that could completely reshape the country.

President Adama Barrow has reiterated his government's commitment to a free media environment, where journalists can do their job without fear, at the annual Presidential Media Dinner held at State House.The event, attended by media chiefs and journalists from across print, broadcast, and online media, provided a platform for the President and the press to interact and discuss pertinent issues affecting the media and the role it plays in building the nation.In her remarks, Director of Press and Public Relations, Amie Bojang Sissoho, emphasised that both the government and the press want the country to develop, but have different priorities and approaches, something she said should not make them enemies.Representing the Gambia Press Union, Board Member Alieu Ceesay expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that it would solidify the good relationship between the government and the Union.Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, said the presidential media dinner shows the President's commitment to resetting and refining his relationship with the Media.President Barrow urged media workers to play more positive and vibrant roles in changing the Media narrative of the Gambia, saying that bulletins of most international agencies are dominated by wars and conflicts, but in the Gambia, media reports are mostly political stories and commentaries because of the democracy, peace, and security in the country.He emphasised that the way differences are moderated could enhance diplomatic and networking efforts, attract investment, and stimulate economic growth.The event was the second edition of the annual presidential media dinner, a tradition started by President Barrow last year.

PRESIDENT BARROW INAUGURATES LANDS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS TO TACKLE DISPUTES, BOOST DECENTRALISATION

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, on Monday presided over the inauguration and swearing-in of members of the newly established Lands Commission and the Local Government Service Commission at a ceremony at State House.  The two Commissions, comprising veteran civil servants,  have the onerous task of strengthening land governance and management in the country as well as resolving disputes related to land. The Lands Commission is headed by Raymond Sock as Chairperson,  Kebba Njie, Babucarr Mbye, Abdoulie Manneh and  Juldeh Ceesay all as members. One after the other, they all took the two oaths of office and secrecy, conducted by the Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Momodou Dibba.They later signed the oath registry officially confirming their appointments. Four other officials were also sworn in to the newly established Local Government Service Commission. Former Police chief and Interior Minister Yankuba Sonko heads this Commission which also has Abdoulie Sallah, Saffie Lowe and Bahyda Hydara as members.They also took the prescribed oaths of office and secrecy,  before signing the oath book.Speaking on behalf of the two Commissions,  Raymond Sock expressed gratitude to the President for the trust and confidence reposed in them, and pledged to live up to expectations. The President described these vital institutions as “integral components of the governance process”  that will “reinforce and add value to the nation's land and local government structures.”He disclosed that the commission has a wide mandate which includes “modernising land records, resolving disputes,  promoting equitable access to land and aligning land management practices” with broader national development goals.On the creation of the local government service commission,  President Barrow said this Commission will “strengthen democracy and decentralisation” as it will operate at the level closest to the ordinary people.The President congratulated the Commissioners and thanked them for accepting this responsibility. As veteran civil servants who have served the government at the highest levels, President Barrow said the Commissioners have the “experience,  integrity and professionalism to deliver up to expectations.”He reassured that his government will give them all the support and encouragement to succeed,  and urged all stakeholders to work with the two Commissions to ensure “fair, impartial and equitable management of land.”

VP JALLOW LAUNCHES FSQA'S STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-2030

His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, the Vice President, presided over the launch of the Food Safety and Quality Authority's (FSQA) Strategic Plan for 2026-2030 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo. This strategic plan outlines the Authority's vision, strategic priorities, and key interventions aimed at strengthening food safety and quality systems, enhancing regulatory effectiveness, and safeguarding public health in The Gambia over the medium term.The landmark event gathered key stakeholders from the government, development partners, and the private sector, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring that citizens have broad access to quality and safe food.Momodou Bah, the Director General of FSQA, explained that this initiative aims to meet the required standards while the FSQA continues to develop national regulations. “We have an Act from 2011, regulations started in 2021, a policy was established in 2024, and now we have developed a strategic plan in 2025. This progression sharpens our focus to ensure we are fulfilling the mandates of the government,” Bah stated.This marks the beginning of a transformative journey, as food safety regulations become increasingly important in ensuring the well-being of every individual.Dr Amadou Sowe, the FSQA Board Chair, emphasised that the successful implementation of the plan will require strong government support. “This ambition will demand sustained investment, strong political will, and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders. Strategic plans don’t implement themselves; they require leadership, discipline, resources, and collective ownership,” Dr Sowe remarked.Immaculada Roca i Cortés, the European Union Ambassador to The Gambia, reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting FSQA. She expressed satisfaction in contributing to a stronger regulatory framework, a more effective inspection and control system, and enhancing technical capabilities.Reports indicate that foodborne illnesses cause an estimated 137,000 deaths annually in Africa, with productivity losses exceeding $20 billion.Public Service Minister Baboucarr Bouy assured FSQA of their support as policymakers while urging all stakeholders to back this initiative. “I urge all stakeholders to rally behind FSQA and support the effective implementation of this Strategic Plan. By doing so, we will not only protect the health of our people but also unlock opportunities for Gambian products to thrive in competitive markets,” Minister Bouy said.In his launch statement, Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow described the FSQA Strategic Plan as the result of rigorous analysis, broad consultation, and honest self-reflection. “It is a plan that is both nationally rooted and internationally aligned,” he remarked.Vice President Jallow characterised the moment as one of “genuine national significance,” stating, “The food we eat is not merely a matter of personal choice; it is a matter of public health, economic security, and national dignity.”An estimated GMD 188.1 million is required for the implementation of the strategic plan over the next five years. H.E. Mohammed B.S. Jallow called on the Ministry of Finance, development partners, and the private sector to recognise food safety as “not a cost, but an investment in public health, economic competitiveness, and The Gambia's reputation as a reliable source of safe, high-quality products in regional and international markets.”The new strategic plan commits to strengthening FSQA's institutional and operational systems, prioritising financial sustainability and resource mobilisation, risk assessment, inspection, surveillance, and enforcement.Additionally, it aims to modernise laboratory services and digital infrastructure, while deepening stakeholder engagement and public awareness.Strategic plans are not just documents; they serve as critical guides for institutions. Their clarity and effectiveness dictate how well these institutions strive to fulfil their purpose.Now that the plan has been launched, the focus will shift to its implementation, which is anticipated to enhance The Gambia’s international recognition in global food markets.

VP JALLOW HOSTS FLURRY OF COURTESY CALLS: UNITY, AUTISM, STUDENT NURSES TOP AGENDA

A flurry of activity took place as several associations paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, the Vice President of The Republic of The Gambia, to introduce their groups and explore potential areas for cooperation.The first to arrive were members of the 'I Am Gambian Association,' a movement dedicated to fostering unity and national pride in the pursuit of sustainable national development.Famara Manka, the President of the association, explained the focus of their visit after a closed-door discussion with Vice President Jallow. He stated that the association, founded last year, is committed to expanding its reach across the country to achieve its goals. "I Am Gambian Association is dedicated to bringing Gambians together. His message to the graduates emphasised the importance of being prepared to face the challenges of the future.In his convocation speech, President and Chancellor H.E. Adama Barrow congratulated the graduates, their families, and the university on this milestone. He noted that hosting such an event in Faraba Banta has become a national symbol of aspiration, strategic investment, and educational transformation.The President added that the convocation's theme, "Higher Education as a Strategic Bridge for Policy, Innovation, and Job Creation," aligns with The Gambia's development priorities. He challenged the graduates to use their knowledge to positively impact the country's development, emphasising that the nation looks to them for solutions to its challenges.President Barrow reassured attendees that his government will continue to invest in education, particularly in the higher education sector, to equip young people with the necessary knowledge and skills to realise their potential.At the conclusion of the ceremony, distinguished students were recognised for their performance, with Ebrima Sumareh emerging as the overall best graduating student for the cohort. PRESIDENT BARROW HOSTS COMMONWEALTH CHIEF, WOMEN’S CHAMBER IN BACK-TO-BACK STATE HOUSE MEETINGS

In a series of meetings at the State House, President H.E. Adama Barrow hosted Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayokor Botchwey and members of the Gambia Women's Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday.Secretary-General Botchwey was accompanied by Serign Modou Njie, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. PRESIDENT BARROW BRIEFED ON UTG CONVOCATION AS 1,600 SET TO GRADUATE IN FARABA

Officials from the University of The Gambia paid a courtesy call on the President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, at State House on Tuesday. The delegation was led by the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology and comprised the Vice Chancellor Professor Herbert Robinson, the Chairman of the Governing Council Prof Momodou Mustapha Fanneh and the Registrar Bobo Baldeh. They were at the State House to update the President,  who is also the Chancellor of the University on the upcoming convocation ceremony at the Faraba Banta campus, where over 1,600 students are expected to graduate after fulfilling all requirements in their different fields of study. Speaking to reporters after they met with President Barrow, Professor Herbert Robinson, the Vice Chancellor, disclosed that discussions were good and productive as they had agreed on all the details of the much-anticipated convocation ceremony later this weekend.Professor Herbert Robinson, the Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia  (pic: State House)“Over 1,600 students will graduate this year from the 9 schools of the University,  among them the first Doctoral graduates and graduates from the new school of Dentistry,” Professor Robinson added.The Vice Chancellor further expressed gratitude to the president and the Higher Education Minister for the support to the University, noting that the UTG has “seen massive investment and modernisation in infrastructure over the years” attributing this to President Barrow's “personal commitment” to the higher education sector.
