VP JALLOW CHAIRS 2026 SECTOR CONSULTATIVE MEETING

Vice President His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow has on Wednesday 8 April presided over the first quarterly meeting of 2026 for the institutions under his purview.The meeting brought together sector directors and their teams from the National Disaster Management Agency, Food Safety and Quality Authority, National Social Protection Agency, National Population Commission Secretariat, National Nutrition Agency, and National Early Warning and Response Mechanism. The purpose was to review their achievements and collectively discuss solutions to the challenges hindering their efforts for greater success.During the meeting, Vice President Jallow commended the various sectors, noting significant progress since the last gathering. “I think we have achieved a lot in 2025. Right now, all our institutions now have an Act of Parliament. During 2025, sectors have come up with a new policy or a revised one. We are working with other sectors to make sure we finalise their policy,” he said.The stakeholders recognised that the advancements made during the review period were particularly positive, especially in supporting vulnerable populations and creating sectoral policy frameworks.Saikou Jeng, the recently appointed Executive Director of the National Social Protection Agency, praised the government for its support and called for additional assistance. He acknowledged the allocation of 80 million dalasi to his agency, which funded the family strengthening program, a cash transfer initiative directed at poor and vulnerable households nationwide. He indicated plans to use any remaining funds for other activities.However, resource constraints were a common concern in their pursuit of further success. Some participants suggested a need for increased resource mobilisation at the sectoral level and the development of documents to attract funding from multilateral donors.The overall impression at the conclusion of this first quarterly meeting of the Office of the Vice President and its associated institutions was highly favourable, with sectors striving to achieve shared national goals.“All the heads of institutions will agree with me that since we started, the camaraderie has improved,  the collegiality has improved. It also shows that we relate to each other not because we are under the Office of the Vice President but whatever we do, has an impact on what the others are doing,” VP Jallow stated.Mariama Fanneh, the Director of the National Population Commission Secretariat, described the meeting as “fruitful” and an “opportunity” to learn from each other, noting that it would significantly aid their improvement as sectors.The Office of the Vice President is committed to strengthening sectoral convergence and alignment to position these five key sectors as drivers of growth and national resilience.

President Barrow Wraps Up 207km Road Tour: 35km of Feeder Roads Launched in Kombo and Foni to Link Farms, Markets and Communities

During the final leg of the stone-laying ceremonies for the proposed 207 km feeder road projects, which are jointly funded by the World Bank and the government, His Excellency Adama Barrow, laid the foundation stones for several feeder roads in Kombo North and South, as well as in Foni.One of the key projects is the Lamin Daranka road, which stretches 1.5 km and serves as a vital link to nearby women's vegetable gardens and rice fields. Although the road is relatively short, it plays a critical role in supporting the lives and livelihoods of thousands of women in this semi-urban area. Community members gathered in large numbers to welcome the President and the First Lady.Following the laying of the foundation stone for the contract awarded to Solo Dabo, with consultancy services provided by Pace and Ceeteq Joint Venture, the President travelled south to the coastal settlement of Gunjur. There, he marked the commencement of work on a 6.1 km road that will connect Gunjur with Berending.This important feeder road is nearly inaccessible during the rainy season, making it difficult for residents to reach markets in Brikama to sell their produce. Residents celebrated this project as a milestone in the history of Kombo South, as it provides essential connectivity to the main population centres.After leaving Kombo South, President Barrow and his entourage returned to Foni, where a day earlier, he had laid the foundation stones for several feeder road projects.His first stop was in Kanpanti, where he laid the foundation stone for a 4.3 km road from Kapa to Ballen. The entourage then proceeded to Kusamai, where another foundation stone laying ceremony took place for a 6 km road to Bajagarr. Similar ceremonies were also held in Sibanor for the construction of a 4.7 km road to Gifanga.In Bulajorr, President Barrow, assisted by the First Lady, Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally, and the village Alkalo, laid the foundation stone for a 6.3 km road to Katacorr. The final stone-laying ceremony took place in Tampoto for the construction of a 9 km road to Jakoi Sibrik, Somita/Batendin, and Jakoi Paima, bringing the total to 34.9 km of feeder roads.These roads are expected to improve rural connectivity, enhance access to markets, and promote socio-economic development. The projects are funded by the World Bank through its Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Value Chain Development Project, with additional funding from the government of The Gambia.

Barrow Breaks Ground on 45km Road Projects, Connecting Kiang and Foni Villages to Highways for First Time

Continuing his tour across the country, President Adama Barrow continues to inspect ongoing works and lay the foundations to provide access to good road networks for communities that have never had such an opportunity.This time, he laid the foundation stones for the construction of 45km of road projects in the Lower River and West Coast Regions, jointly funded by the government and the World Bank through the GIRAV project. The feeder road projects seek to enhance rural connectivity and access to markets thereby promoting agricultural development.Among these projects is one that connects communities in Kiang Kabada who have long been isolated to the Transgambia highway and is contracted to Longjing a Chinese firm, with Gamecs Consulting Engineers as consultants.The President drove through the 102km road, which is now over 63% complete, covering 12 road links within the Kabada.From Kiang East, the President and entourage drove West to also inspect works on the 86km Kiang West road project contracted to Gai Construction and City Scape Associates.The project has made significant progress with 98% of the work now completed. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase 39km long, stretching from Sankandi on the main highway to the Karantaba Trunk road. The second phase is 48km long comprising 10 road sections encompassing 20 villages in the area, significantly enhancing access.President Barrow with assistance from the First Lady Fatoumatta Bah Barrow, Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally, the Governor and the Alkalo of the village, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 4.5 km road as part of the World Bank feeder roads project at the community of Sare Jama.The same ceremonies were repeated in the Fonis, West Coast Region where the President laid foundation stones in 4 other villages.The first was in Djonkil, Foni Jarrol where a 4.3km road will connect Djonkil, Kewel,  Kangmamudu and Kampasa.Another road, 7km long will connect Wassadu, Adullay,  Fass Chabai, Kanjiramba Busary and Bulengat.The third road, which is 7.5 km, will link the communities of Burambang, Bulengat, Tibat, Kankurang and Bambara in Foni Bondali.The last foundation laying ceremony took place in Nyantempo, Foni Jarrol district for the construction of the 7.2 km road linking the village to Fass Chamen, Nfee, Jending,  Jilahar and Bulunto.

PRESIDENT BARROW HANDS OVER MILLIONS IN FARM EQUIPMENT

His Excellency,  President Adama Barrow, has handed over agricultural equipment valued at millions of Dalasis to selected farmers throughout the country during a ceremony held in Brikamaba, CRR South. The equipment, which includes power tillers, milling machines, threshers, combined harvesters, and tricycles, is funded by the World Bank through the GIRAV project. This handover represents a strategic shift toward mechanised agriculture.Over 400 pieces of modern agricultural production and processing equipment are designed to empower local farmers by encouraging large-scale production and transitioning to commercial agriculture.In his speech at the ceremony, President Barrow praised this initiative as a tangible demonstration of his government's commitment to national food security and sustainability. He emphasised that mechanisation is crucial for transforming the agricultural sector and stated that this equipment will enhance efficiency and increase output throughout the agricultural value chain.The President expressed deep gratitude to the World Bank for its support of Gambian farmers and commended the GIRAV project for promoting climate-smart farming, improved agricultural methods, and mechanisation.He advised farmers to use the equipment sustainably to maximise production.Representatives of farmer associations praised the government, under President Barrow's leadership, for its support. They noted that this initiative marks a historic first where local farmers have free access to mechanised equipment and assured that the equipment would be used for its intended purposes.Other speakers at the ceremony, including the Alkalo, Chief, Regional Governor, and a National Assembly Member, highlighted the significance of this development as a historic milestone in the country’s agricultural transformation. They acknowledged that the challenges faced by farmers had discouraged many young people from pursuing farming as a career.With the introduction of this new equipment, the speakers noted that farmers now have a chance to expand production, create jobs, and drive development.In a related development, President Barrow also presented two new ambulances to the communities of Njoben Health Post and Jamagen Health Post. The keys to the ambulances were handed over to representatives of the two villages, who expressed their gratitude to the President and his government.The agricultural production and processing equipment will be distributed to individual farmers and associations across the country, with 50% of the beneficiaries being women and young people.

The President His Excellency Adama Barrow held a meeting in Chamoi Bunda, Wuli West, as part of his six-day tour to lay the foundation stones for World Bank-funded road projects. This meeting was an opportunity for the Gambian leader to highlight his government's commitment to infrastructural development as a key driver of growth. The project will fund the construction of a 5.4 km road from Chamoi Bunda to Limbambulu.Beneficiary communities from the wider Wuli West district attended the meeting and celebrated the launch of this important project.During the meeting, both the Alkalo of Chamoi Bunda and the Chief of Wuli West praised the President and the World Bank for their efforts to transform rural communities and empower farmers.Kebba Sillah, a respected community leader, described the road project as transformative. He emphasised that it offers farming communities better access to markets and services. Mr Sillah also commended the government and the Ministry of Agriculture for providing farmers with subsidies, fertiliser, and seeds, adding that these feeder roads are essential for large-scale agricultural production.The regional chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Bubu Drammeh, also acknowledged President Barrow for his investments in agriculture, which have resulted in increased yields. He credited these improvements to the President's personal commitment and progressive leadership. The regional chairman urged voters to register for the upcoming election and to support the ruling party.District youth representatives Ousman Bah and Aja Fatou Saho praised the project as a significant opportunity for young people to engage in agriculture, facilitating employment and sustainable socio-economic development. They remarked that President Barrow’s leadership has initiated numerous programs to empower youth, and they encouraged their peers to embrace these opportunities in agriculture to foster growth and development.Honourable Famara Sabally, the National Assembly Member for Wuli West, noted that these feeder roads had been neglected for decades, which had caused hardships for rural farmers trying to access markets. The Governor urged Gambians to remain united and peaceful to accelerate national development.Sulayman Sumareh, the Director General of the National Roads Authority, revealed that the roads would be built to standards designed to last 25 years. PRESIDENT BARROW LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR 200KM FEEDER ROADS: $25M WORLD BANK PROJECT TO BOOST AGRICULTURE

President Adama Barrow, accompanied by a high-powered delegation including cabinet ministers, World Bank officials, and other senior government representatives, is embarking on a six-day tour across various regions to lay the foundation stones for over 200 km of feeder roads. These projects, jointly funded by the government and the World Bank with a budget of $25 million, aim to empower rural communities by improving their access to markets.During the tour, President Barrow is expected to lay foundation stones for road projects in selected communities located in the North Bank, Central River, Upper River, and West Coast Regions. He was seen off at the Banjul ferry terminal by Vice President Jallow, several cabinet ministers, and security service chiefs.At the terminal, the President was greeted by a guard of honour from the Gambia Navy before boarding the new Barra ferry to his first destination, Kerr Jatta in the Lower Nuimi District. There, he laid the first stone for a 7.3 km road connecting the communities of Kerr Jatta, Ndofan, and Kerr Walli to the main highway.He also laid the foundation stone for a 9 km road extending from Fass Njaga Choi to Ndungu Kebbeh. Additionally, two other stone-laying ceremonies took place for nearly 13 km of roads in Kerr Selen and Kuntaya, linking several communities in Jokadu. The President then moved on to the Baddibu region, where similar ceremonies were held in Makka Farafenni, Illiasa, and Yallal Tankonjala. Here, he laid the foundation stones for 22 km of road that will connect 12 communities to the main roads.The contracts for these projects have been awarded to Chino Gam, a Chinese construction company, and the projects are expected to take two years to complete. President Barrow described these initiatives as unprecedented and emphasised his government's commitment to providing infrastructural development to enhance socio-economic growth.He stated that these projects will also help diversify road infrastructure developments to reach hard-to-access areas and create opportunities for local farmers. Minister of Agriculture Dr Demba Sabally praised the partnership between the government and the World Bank, asserting that this multi-million dollar project will have a positive impact on agriculture. Momodou Sabally, a presidential adviser, called the project a game-changer in The Gambia's quest for food security and sustainability, noting that farmers will now have easier access to markets.Funding for these projects is provided by the World Bank through a grant under the Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development Project.

Fabakary Tombong Jatta, called the proceedings to order, allowing the President to present a detailed overview of his government's accomplishments over the past 12 months, discuss challenges, and offer solutions.President Barrow provided an overall positive assessment of his government’s performance. He shared that the economy has shown "remarkable resilience," growing nearly 6% while keeping inflation at 6.6%. This growth was largely driven by agriculture, construction, trade, and tourism.The President noted progress in infrastructure development, including the construction of hundreds of kilometres of roads across the country. These achievements, he stated, underscore his government's commitment to national development, highlighting that modern road, air, and maritime infrastructure are the "foundation and vehicle for sustainable socio-economic development."Regarding energy, the President announced that his government is on track to achieve universal electricity access with the commissioning of projects nationwide. He emphasised that this milestone makes The Gambia the first country in the subregion to attain such an achievement. He assured citizens that his government would continue to provide funding to Nawec (National Water and Electricity Company) and partner with stakeholders to ensure accessibility, reliability, and sustainability. "We have allocated three hundred and ninety-seven million dalasis (GMD 397 million) in the 2026 Budget to expand electricity services to the remaining unelectrified communities," he stated.The President also highlighted positive developments in the agricultural sector, which accounts for 22% of GDP, as it drives economic growth and empowers local communities. He noted an increase in food production last year, attributed largely to government support and investments in the sector. Additionally, there has been a significant expansion in access to clean drinking water, which has improved the lives and livelihoods of Gambians.In terms of peace and security, the President declared, "The Gambia is the safest and most peaceful country in West Africa," reflecting the growing confidence in national institutions and the unwavering commitment of security services to maintaining peace, security, and stability."The Gambia is now ranked the safest country in West Africa and the fourth safest in Africa, according to Business Insider Africa. This achievement demonstrates the increasing confidence in our national institutions and the steadfast dedication of our security services to safeguarding the country and its people," he asserted.The Gambian leader encouraged citizens to reflect on these achievements and to recommit themselves to the ideals and values of the Republic as represented in the recovery-focused National Development Plan, YIRIWA.He acknowledged the existing challenges facing the country, particularly in areas such as the economy, climate change, and the unpredictable global environment. However, he reassured the public that his government will continue to address these challenges by working closely with all stakeholders and partners.The National Assembly will convene next week to discuss the contents of the President's address.

President Adama Barrow commissioned a new hybrid ferry on Monday during a ceremony held in Barra. The ferry was jointly funded by the government and the African Development Bank to improve transportation at one of The Gambia's busiest ferry crossings, linking the capital city, Banjul, to the North Bank Region.Named the Barra ferry, it has a larger passenger and cargo capacity than the existing fleet.The ultra-modern hybrid vessel arrived in The Gambia from Damen Shipyard in the Netherlands, where it was completed after 14 months of construction.The commissioning of this ferry is being celebrated as a significant milestone in the government's efforts to address the ongoing challenges at this vital crossing point in The Gambia.During the ceremony at the Barra garage, attended by senior government officials and members of the community, the Alkalo of Barra, Alhaji Babu Faye, expressed gratitude to the president for fulfilling his promise. He noted that Barra is strategically located as a gateway to the sub-region, and the provision of reliable, efficient, and modern ferry services will boost trade and facilitate the free movement of people.The Alkalo further urged ferry operators and management to ensure the safe and sustainable use of the ferry to effectively serve the public.This sentiment was echoed by the Chief of Lower Nuimi, George Sonko, who commended the President for taking decisive actions to address the challenges associated with ferry crossings. He also called on the ferry service to prioritise customer satisfaction by improving its services.The Governor of the North Bank Region, Lamin Saidykhan, spoke about the indispensable role of the Banjul-Barra ferry crossing in the socio-economic development of the country. He added that “this brand new green ferry will finally address the constraints associated with crossing.”The Regional Director of the African Development Bank, Dr Lamin Barrow, praised the long-standing partnership between the Bank and The Gambia, assuring that the African Development Bank will continue to support the government's efforts in enhancing sustainable socio-economic and infrastructural development.The Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority, Ousman Jobarteh, revealed that the Barra ferry was designed to meet the highest standards of shipbuilding and naval architecture. He added that the vessel is one of five components of the existing grant provided by the African Development Bank to The Gambia.President H.E. Adama Barrow stated that his government is committed to building robust transport infrastructure to foster socio-economic growth, describing the Banjul-Barra corridor as an essential pathway for The Gambia's sustained growth and development.The President lamented the persistent transportation challenges associated with this corridor in the past but expressed optimism that this new ferry will significantly improve services and facilitate transport.He thanked the African Development Bank for its support and assured that his government will continue to prioritise the Banjul-Barra route by providing a second ferry to augment the current fleet. President Barrow also promised to construct a bridge connecting Banjul and Barra in the near future.Finally, the President encouraged the ferry services to ensure the safe and sustainable use of their fleet to guarantee longevity and value for money.Accompanied by officials and other dignitaries, the President boarded the ferry for its first voyage to Banjul, where he cut the ribbon to mark the symbolic commencement of services.

PRESIDENT BARROW JOINS BANJUL MUSLIMS IN PRAYERS 

President H.E. Adama Barrow joined the residents of Banjul at the King Fahd Mosque to perform prayers marking the Feast of Eid al-Fitr, locally known as Koriteh. This feast commemorates the end of Ramadan, the third pillar of Islam, during which Muslims fast for an entire month.Banjulians from across the city gathered at the King Fahd Mosque for the prayers, accompanied by Vice President H.E. Mohammed BS Jallow, Cabinet Ministers, Security Services Chiefs, and National Assembly Members.As is customary, President Barrow joined the congregation and was welcomed at the entrance of the mosque by Vice President Muhammed Jallow, Security Services Chiefs, and members of the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders.Imam Ratib of Banjul, Alhaji Cherno Alieu Mass Kah, led the Eid prayers at the Banjul Central Mosque.After the two rak’ahs of prayer, Imam Ratib delivered a sermon in which he congratulated Muslims and all Gambians on the celebration of Koriteh, praying for the country and its leadership. He urged Muslims to be mindful of their religious obligations and to follow the tenets of Islam while also fostering peace, tranquillity, and good neighbourly relations.Following the prayers, the President was escorted out by his officials and the Elders of Banjul. Later in the day, President Barrow hosted a meeting at the State House with the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, and other religious scholars to celebrate the occasion.

PRESIDENT BARROW MEETS IMF DELEGATION, BACKS YOUTH FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

President Adama Barrow met with a high-level delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Deputy Managing Director Bo Li. The delegation was accompanied to the State House by Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Seedy Keita and Central Bank Governor Buah Saidy.In a separate engagement, President Barrow also received members of the organising committee for the President's sponsored Ramadan tournament.After their meeting, Bo Li spoke to reporters, stating that both sides discussed ways to deepen the existing cooperation and partnership between the IMF and The Gambia.Additionally, during a meeting with the organising committee for the President Barrow Ramadan Night Football Tournament, currently taking place at the Serekunda West Mini Stadium and the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium, the President expressed his support for the event, which features 40 teams competing for a coveted trophy.Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Badjie stated that the youths met with the President to express their gratitude for his sponsorship and to invite him to the final match scheduled for this weekend.NPP National Youth President Momodou Sabally described the tournament as groundbreaking, noting it has provided a platform for young people to compete in a healthy environment. He praised the sports committee for organising what he referred to as a peaceful and highly competitive tournament.Sabally also revealed plans to expand the tournament to cover all regions of the country, drawing on the lessons learned from the ongoing tournament, which has attracted record attendance and excitement from young people.The organisers took this opportunity to invite the public to attend the final match this Sunday at the Serekunda West Mini Stadium, where the President is expected to be present.

GAMBIA REVENUE AUTHORITY LAUDED FOR CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE 

During the first Economic Council meeting, chaired by President Adama Barrow earlier this week, the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) received praise for its consistent performance over the years in mobilising revenue to drive growth and development.The GRA is essential to the government's operations, tasked by law with mobilising and administering tax revenue. This responsibility is significant and complex, and the GRA takes it very seriously.Under the leadership of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe, the Authority has consistently met and even surpassed its annual revenue collection targets. This year is no different, with positive prospects already evident.The GRA's progress and performance stem from a strong commitment to reform. Commissioner Darboe has initiated various reforms aimed at maximising revenue, eliminating leakages, and enhancing efficiency. Notable initiatives include the introduction of a digital tax stamp and a fuel marking system to increase revenue.The Authority has also launched a single-window platform at all ports of entry and exit to track the transfer and transit of goods within The Gambia. All activities are monitored from the GRA headquarters, allowing officials to trace all movements and prevent the diversion of trucks and fuel tankers.This system is backed by dedicated infrastructure installed at the Banjul Ports, facilitating quick turnover and enabling businesses to clear goods within 24 hours. GRA staff can scan containers to determine their contents within minutes and digitally weigh trucks to assess volumes. Additionally, containers unloaded from ships can be electronically registered.With these systems in place, Mr Darboe believes innovation and digitalisation are key to the GRA's future. The Authority is already planning to introduce a centralised platform allowing taxpayers to pay all taxes online from the comfort of their homes or offices, eliminating the need to visit GRA offices in person.These improvements have reduced bureaucracy, enabling agents and businesses to clear containers from Banjul Port with ease and transparency. Rafael Mendy, the GRA's seaport manager, emphasises that these developments highlight the Authority's commitment to service, transparency, and accountability.Another ambitious initiative, the Rental Income Tax, is already making an impact by transforming the collection and management of rent tax in The Gambia. This initiative covers properties within the Kanifing Municipality and Brikama Area Council and has seen revenue surge from D92 million at its launch in October last year to D139 million this month.All these advancements aim to maximise revenue collection, enhance efficiency, and promote transparency. The GRA's vision as a public institution is to empower taxpayers to take greater responsibility in assessing their tax obligations.Commissioner Darboe credits these successes to the political will and leadership of the President, who has been highly supportive of the Authority. He looks to the future with renewed confidence that the GRA will continue to sustainably mobilise revenue to drive socio-economic and infrastructural development in an atmosphere of peace and stability.The Economic Council meets monthly to discuss economic issues, review the performance of state institutions and agencies, and provide advice to the President and his government on economic matters.

PRESIDENT BARROW PERFORMS UMRAH IN HOLY CITY OF MAKKAH

His Excellency President Adama Barrow and his delegation have arrived in the Holy City of Makkah from Medina to perform Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage.Dressed in Ihram, a symbol of purity and humility, the President and his delegation travelled to Makkah aboard a two-hour train journey to Islam’s holiest city.Consular Ebou Ndure said the trip to Makkah marks the climax of the President’s spiritual journey, which has so far included visits to the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Masjid al-Quba, and the Mountains of Uhud.Inside the VIP coach, the atmosphere was calm and reflective, filled with religious chants as the President reaffirmed his intention to perform Umrah in accordance with Islamic teachings and traditions.On arrival in Makkah, President Barrow was received by officials from the Royal Palace and escorted to the Royal Guest House overlooking the Holy Kaaba.Shortly after, he was led to Masjid Al-Haram to begin the Umrah rites. The President first performed Maghrib prayers at the Holy Kaaba alongside members of his delegation.He then proceeded to perform Tawaf, circling the Holy Kaaba seven times, aboard specially designated vehicles reserved for heads of state and dignitaries.Following Tawaf, President Barrow performed Sa’i, walking between Safa and Marwa. The nearly 2km journey, completed seven times, relives the footsteps of Hajara, wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who made the same trek in search of water for her son, Prophet Ismail.After completing all prescribed rituals, the President returned to the Kaaba to perform Ishaa congregational prayers, marking the conclusion of the Umrah rites.President Barrow was later escorted back to the Royal Guest House. He is expected to travel to Jeddah for a series of engagements, including a meeting with members of the Gambian community in Saudi Arabia.

PRESIDENT BARROW MEETS AFDB PRESIDENT TAH TO DEEPEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND ENERGY PARTNERSHIP

President Adama Barrow on Friday received a high-level delegation from the African Development Bank Group, led by its President Dr Sidi Ould Tah, at State House. The two sides reviewed the existing partnership between The Gambia and the AfDB and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, electricity, and other priority development areas.Dr Ould Tah was accompanied to the State House by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Sidi Keita. Speaking to reporters after the talks, the AfDB President expressed appreciation to President Barrow for The Gambia’s strong support to the Bank and for the “fruitful partnership over the years.”Dr Ould Tah reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to continue supporting The Gambia to deliver on key sectors and projects aimed at improving the quality of life and livelihoods of citizens. He commended The Gambia under President Barrow’s leadership for its “impressive performance” in economic management, domestic resource mobilisation, and reforms of key state institutions.“We also congratulated the Gambian leader on the country’s microfinance performance, growth, domestic resource mobilisation, and reforms related to state enterprises and procurement,” Dr Ould Tah said. “The Gambian Leader gave us clear direction on the priorities of his government and his development vision for the country. The African Development Bank Group is keen to provide funding and support across all sectors to match that orientation.”Minister of Finance Sidi Keita said The Gambia remains committed to working with development partners like the AfDB to strengthen growth and development. He described the visit as “a strong vote of confidence and trust in The Gambia.”Dr Ould Tah and his delegation will remain in The Gambia for several days. They are scheduled to hold engagements with officials from various government sectors to review existing cooperation and explore new areas of partnership with government and other stakeholders.

VP JALLOW MEETS GUINEA-BISSAU COMMUNICATION MINISTER 

The Guinea-Bissau Minister of Social Communication and Government Spokesperson, Hon. Dr Abduramane Turé, has paid a courtesy call on The Gambia’s Vice President, His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, at State House. The visit is aimed at strengthening ties between Bissau and Banjul. Minister Turé was accompanied to the Vice President’s office by Guinea-Bissau’s Ambassador to The Gambia, Luís Camara de Barros, alongside The Gambia’s Minister of Information, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, Permanent Secretary Codu L. Jabang, and Director of Information Services, Aisha Davis.The delegation held a closed-door meeting with the Vice President. Afterwards, Minister Turé addressed the press on key issues discussed.“I did not come to discuss a specific agenda with His Excellency the Vice President. I'm here to brief him on the core objectives of my mission to The Gambia, and further update him on the current status of bilateral cooperation in the field of media and social communication,” he said.Minister Turé commended the cordial relations between Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia, describing them as strong and mutually beneficial.The Guinea-Bissau official also praised the Vice President for the warm reception, saying VP Jallow reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the development agendas of both countries. PRESIDENT BARROW ARRIVES IN SAUDI ARABIA FOR SIX-DAY VISIT

His Excellency President Adama Barrow has arrived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a six-day official visit.The President is accompanied by a high-powered delegation comprising First Lady Sarjo Mballow Barrow, the Chief of Staff and Minister of the Presidency Aliu Loum, and the Commissioner General of The Gambia Revenue Authority Yankuba Darboe.President Barrow was received on arrival by His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Nahar Al Saud, Governor of Madina, His Excellency Mambury Njai, The Gambia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Deputy Ambassador Omar Baldeh, and Consul General at The Gambia’s Consulate in Madina, Ebou Ndure.Following his arrival, President Barrow held a brief tete-a-tete with Prince Saud at the Airport VVIP lounge. The President thanked the Saudi government for the warm hospitality accorded to him and his delegation.For his part, Prince Saud welcomed the President and his delegation to the Kingdom and reassured them of the Saudi government’s support to ensure a successful visit.President Barrow is expected to begin official activities in Madina on Friday with prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque and a visit to the Rawdah, where the Prophet PBUH and his two companions, Abubacarr and Omar, are buried.

PRESIDENT BARROW: ‘NO COUNTRY CAN REACH ITS POTENTIAL WITHOUT EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS’

Over 730 young women graduate from SWEDD+ entrepreneurship training and receive D50,000 – D75,000 business grantsPresident Adama Barrow has said no country can realise its full potential without investing in women and girls, as The Gambia certified 730 beneficiaries under the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Plus Project, SWEDD+. Speaking at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, the President said families thrive and communities grow stronger when women are supported. The ceremony recognised women and girls aged 15-24 who completed a three-month entrepreneurship training program under SWEDD+, implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare.The five-year project targets out-of-school women and girls to improve livelihoods, skills, and economic independence.A total of D117 million has been earmarked for more than 2,000 young women under the project. For this first cohort of over 700 graduands, each will receive between D50,000 and D75,000 in business grants.The Ministry has set aside D32 million to be disbursed directly to the new graduates to start or expand their businesses. Cheques and certificates were presented to regional representatives at the event.Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare described the event as a “milestone” toward economic independence for beneficiaries. He commended President Barrow for advancing gender equality, noting that the skills gained will “open doors” for the graduates.Alpha Humma, Project Manager for the Women Enterprise Fund, said the training will enable graduands to contribute meaningfully to society. He confirmed the D32 million grant facility to support business start-ups.World Bank Representative Franklin Mutahakana said entrepreneurship training helps break barriers that limit women and girls. “This program gives young women more economic uplift,” he said, and reaffirmed the Bank’s support for The Gambia’s women’s empowerment agenda.Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Kaddy Balajo thanked the President, the Ministry of Gender, and the World Bank. “Women and girls are not mere beneficiaries of development, but partners,” she said. “The skills, knowledge, and grants we have received will transform our lives.”In his keynote, President Barrow congratulated the graduands and said investing in human capital through SWEDD+ is critical for sustainable growth.He urged beneficiaries to use the grants wisely and serve as inspiration to others. FIVE STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES HAND OVER D137 MILLION IN DIVIDENDS TO PRESIDENT BARROW

Five state-owned enterprises, SOEs, handed over cheques totalling D137 million in dividend payments to President H.E. Adama Barrow at a ceremony held at State House on Tuesday. The unprecedented development marks a milestone in government-SOE relations, following reforms aimed at making the enterprises more profitable, better managed, and financially viable.For the first time in The Gambia’s history, SOEs lined up at State House not to request bailouts, but to return dividends worth over D130 million to the President.Board chairpersons, managing directors, and officials of the State-Owned Enterprises Commission gathered in the Cabinet Room to witness the ceremony. The five SOEs and their contributions were:1. Gambia Ports Authority: D70 million.2. Gambia National Petroleum Corporation: D50 million.3. Gambia Civil Aviation Authority: D5 million.4. Gambia Publishing and Printing Corporation: D5 million.5. The Gambia Radio and Television Services: D2 million.Chief of Staff to the President, Alieu Loum, who chaired the event, described it as unique. “The SOEs have fulfilled their obligations to government and to Gambians,” he said.The Chairman of the SOE Commission, Ousainou Ngum, said since the commission’s establishment three years ago, there has been remarkable improvement in the operations, management, and performance of state enterprises. He expressed hope that this transformation will continue, starting with this first dividend payment. Ngum also commended President Barrow for his leadership, oversight, and support to the commission and SOEs.In his keynote address, President Barrow described the ceremony as historic, noting it marks a turnaround for SOEs that, until 2024, were running a combined net loss of D2.4 billion. He attributed the performance to his government’s deliberate, sustained, and evidence-driven reform agenda focused on governance, accountability, and performance management.The President praised the SOE Commission for transforming public perception of state institutions and promoting efficiency. However, he urged all stakeholders to build on these achievements to address challenges affecting growth, liquidity, and profitability.President Barrow also reassured Gambians that the government will continue robust measures to end recurrent power cuts. He noted that NAWEC has improved its financial performance, enabling investment in the energy sector.He concluded by urging all SOEs to maintain the momentum, as the government remains committed to building efficient, functional, and robust state enterprises that deliver for the Gambian people.
