GAMBIA SIGNS SPORTS & EDUCATION DEAL WITH TIBU AFRICA 

The Vice President, His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, has presided over the signing of a cooperation agreement between Tibu Africa from the Kingdom of Morocco and the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education, Youth and Sports at the State House in Banjul. This agreement aims to support the national development agenda, especially in youth empowerment, education transformation, sports development, and international collaboration. The delegation from Tibu Africa accompanied by Bakary Y. Badjie the Minister of Youth and Sports, and Dr Habibatou Drammeh the Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, went to the Vice President's office to formally introduce their initiatives in The Gambia.Following an in-depth discussion with VP Jallow regarding the programme, the approach to implementation, and its potential impact on the country, the president of Tibu Africa Mohamed Amine Zariat, proceeded to sign agreements with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.These agreements, reaffirming the Government’s strong commitment to investing in Gambian youth development and empowerment, through strategic international partnerships, also form part of broader efforts to expand opportunities for Gambian youth in sport and education, as highlighted by Tibu Africa's President, Mohamed Amine Zariat.This partnership also aims to incorporate sports into national development policies. Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Y Badjie described the arrival of Tibu Africa in The Gambia as a “significant advantage.”The Gambia is poised to become the first English-speaking country to benefit from Tibu Africa's intervention and partnership programmes, marking a significant milestone in the organisation’s expansion within the African continent.Basic and Secondary Education Minister, Dr Habibatou Drammeh said the government, through her ministry, is “fully committed to the agreement with Tibu Africa.”This programme targets all “642 public primary schools across the country.” A similar agreement is expected to be signed between Tibu Africa and the Ministry of Interior.Tibu Africa is internationally recognised for its innovative use of sports as a catalyst for sustainable social transformation, youth empowerment, educational advancement, and community development. The organisation operates in more than fifty-two cities across the twelve regions of Morocco and has expanded its interventions to several African countries, including Tunisia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Madagascar.

GRA DOUBLES REVENUE TO D25.3B IN 5 YEARS UNDER DARBOE

The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has significantly improved its performance over the last five years, thanks to good management, strong leadership, and new ideas. Their revenue has increased from D12.7 billion in 2021 to an impressive D25.3 billion in 2025. This success has come from the efforts of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe and his team, who transformed an authority that used to struggle to meet its goals.The 2026 GRA awards celebrate the biggest and most compliant taxpayers of the year. They also highlight the GRA as an institution that consistently exceeds expectations.Yankuba Darboe has been leading the GRA since 2014, six years after it was created by combining the central revenue department with the customs and excise departments. His leadership has brought about changes that have greatly improved how revenue is collected and taxed in The Gambia.With a dedicated team and support from a government focused on development, Mr Darboe started reforms that doubled and even tripled revenue in a short time. This earned him praise from the government and his colleagues.President H.E. Adama Barrow has been inspired by Darboe’s achievements and has attended every taxpayer award night to recognise and appreciate his leadership and contributions.Colleagues at the GRA also admire Darboe for his leadership skills, passion for success, and commitment to exceeding targets.Despite this success, Mr Darboe remains humble and sees these achievements as motivation to keep improving. He believes in always finding new opportunities and welcoming innovations, without creating more pressure on taxpayers. His main goal is to expand the tax base, rather than raise tax rates for the people.As they celebrate another successful year, the GRA leadership and team are confident in their ability to continue meeting and exceeding targets, supported by new technologies and systems. PRESIDENT BARROW JOINS GRA IN HONORING 33 TOP TAXPAYERS AT 8TH AWARDS

The Gambia Revenue Authority held its 8th Taxpayer Awards at a hotel in Bijilo. Many important people attended, including President Adama Barrow, government ministers, private company leaders, and GRA staff.The purpose of the awards is to appreciate taxpayers who follow tax rules and to show how important taxes are for the country’s growth. For the third year in a row, Africell, a mobile service provider, was recognised as the biggest taxpayer.President Barrow was the special guest at the event, which has become a regular part of the GRA's yearly activities.These awards are not just a celebration for the GRA; they also support its goal of collecting resources needed for the country's development.Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe shared that over the last 20 years, the GRA has made great strides in increasing the money it collects, often surpassing set targets. This success is due to strong management and efforts to improve the system.He assured everyone that the GRA is committed to collecting domestic resources to help the government’s development plans. The GRA chief also thanked taxpayers for meeting their legal duties and promised to continue working together with all partners to ensure compliance.Dawda Sarr, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, praised President Barrow for his important support, which has helped make the GRA a strong agency for gathering resources for the government.He added that the GRA is on track to reach its target for 2026. It has already collected over D7 billion in tax revenue in the first quarter, which is a record for tax collection.President Barrow acknowledged the important role of taxpayers in developing the country, saying that progress relies on their contributions.He mentioned that his government's policy focuses on using local resources for development instead of relying heavily on foreign help, loans, or grants. He proudly stated that the GRA has met and even exceeded all its targets in the last ten years.The President also thanked taxpayers for their support, highlighting that their contributions are vital for continuous development. He noted that taxes are reinvested in building roads and other important infrastructure to improve the lives of the people in The Gambia.Due to the conflict in the Middle East, the global economy has been affected, causing fuel prices to rise. The President assured that his government is taking steps to address this situation, including subsidising fuel prices to keep them affordable for everyone.The event wrapped up with certificates and prizes being given to 33 companies, organisations, and individuals for their excellent compliance and timely tax submissions.Africell was recognised again as the largest taxpayer of the year for the third time. President Adama Barrow also received an award for his continued support of the Gambia Revenue Authority.

PRESIDENT BARROW LAUNCHES 20.5KM ROAD IN NIAMINA, ENDING DECADES OF WAIT

President Adama Barrow has congratulated the people of Niamina on the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a 20.5 km road that will connect dozens of villages across the vast district. The President made this announcement during a meeting with three communities in Mali Kunda, Niamina West.After decades of unfulfilled promises, the people of Niamina are finally witnessing a significant development as President Barrow laid the foundation stone for the road at a ceremony in Choya, Niamina West. This event marks a historic milestone for the community.During the meeting in Mali Kunda, residents warmly welcomed the President and expressed their gratitude for what they describe as “the most important development in their lives.”Gelajo Jallow, the Alkalo of Mali Kunda, expressed deep emotions as he recalled the long wait for this road to be constructed. He stated that this event represents “the happiest day of his life.” The Alkalo pointed out that the “poor road conditions have been utilised by the opposition to criticise the government, but now that the President has laid the foundation stone, it will put that issue to rest and convince the people of Niamina that the National People's Party (NPP) is development-oriented.”This sentiment was shared by all the residents of Niamina who spoke at the meeting. Mamadu Jallow, the youth representative; Chief Ngagne Danfa of Niamina Dankunku; and Oumie Ceesay, the women’s representative, all acknowledged the various developments that have positively impacted Niamina.They agreed that this road project is unprecedented, being the most significant need of the community. With electricity and water now accessible, the speakers commended President Barrow for this bold initiative. They pledged to ensure a “massive victory for the NPP in the upcoming Presidential election in December,” as the overwhelming majority of people recognise the value of this new development.Sulayman Sawaneh, Chairman of the Janjanbureh Area Council, recalled his childhood days of walking this challenging road to reach school, describing those experiences as a “difficult chapter in his life.” Like others, he expressed profound gratitude to President Barrow for keeping his promise.For Honourable Samba Jallow, the National Assembly Member for Niamina Dankunku, this event is the happiest day of his life, marking the end of many years of waiting. “This is a proud day for me because this road has been our biggest nightmare. It will now cement my legacy,” he added.Honourable Jallow reflected on how the road has been a political talking point but noted that “even the opposition will acknowledge this as a turning point in the development of Niamina.”Governor Ousman Bah of the Central River Region (CRR) stated, “This project is the result of a meticulous strategy by the government to respond to the needs of the people.” He emphasised that CRR has received “its fair share of development under President Barrow,” a sentiment that resonates with the residents. He urged the people of the region to “carefully weigh their options and vote for continuity.”Honourable Borom Sowe of Niamina West also expressed his happiness and gratitude to President Barrow, noting that this project will “strengthen his legacy.”Sulayman Sumareh, the Director General of the National Roads Authority, revealed that over the last five days, President Barrow has laid “15 foundation stones” for the construction of “900 km of roads in the Upper River and Central River Regions.” He credited this success to “President Barrow's leadership qualities, foresight, and charisma.”In his keynote address, President Adama Barrow described Mali Kunda as a “historic village in Niamina,” emphasising the strategic and symbolic nature of the meeting's location. He paid tribute to the elders, men, women, and youth of Niamina for their strong turnout, which reflects their love and support.The President praised the First Lady for her efforts in complementing the work of his government, revealing that her foundation has already invested “D27 million in an Accident and Emergency ward at Bansang Hospital, the first of its kind in the provinces.”He added that the “First Lady’s Foundation is also building three maternity wards for D30 million to support safe deliveries at three health facilities in the country.” These initiatives, according to President Barrow, “underscore the First Lady's commitment to Gambian women.”Discussing the road's potential impact on Niamina, President Barrow said, “This is the fulfilment of a promise made to the people.” He remarked, “My opponents have always doubted me, but I always deliver on my promises, much to their disappointment.”The President reassured the people of Niamina that they will receive everything they have lacked for the past 50 years, citing the provision of electricity and water as examples. He challenged the community to “critically assess the politicians who come to them.”

PRESIDENT BARROW LAUNCHES ROADS TO LINK FARMING COMMUNITIES IN JARUMEH KOTO, WASSU, NYANGA BANTANG

His Excellency Adama Barrow laid the foundation stone for the construction of additional feeder roads in the Central River Region North on Monday, aimed at linking remote communities. He laid the groundwork for 50 kilometres of roads in Jarumeh Koto, Wassu, and Nyanga Bantang.The President laid the first block for a 12-kilometre road that will connect the communities of Jarumeh Koto, Manna, Salikenni, Jarumeh Kuta, and Kayai. These areas depend heavily on agriculture as their primary source of income, and this road will serve as the main corridor for access to these inland communities. Residents have expressed optimism about the road's construction, especially given the poor condition of existing roads during the rainy season.Just a few kilometres from Jarumeh Koto, President Barrow also laid the foundation stone for another significant road beginning at the highway and extending through swampy areas to Barajali Tenda, the birthplace of the first President, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara. This road will traverse Kuntaur, Jakaba, and Niani Sukuta, regions known for year-round rice production. The road primarily accommodates horse carts that transport passengers and goods from the main market, or "Lumo," in Wassu.The President's laying of the foundation stone has generated excitement among residents, who view this project as the first step toward alleviating their long-standing hardships. Currently, the only means of transport to Wassu is via horse carts, and women in the area have shared that they often have to walk several kilometres to reach the main road.“In the rainy season, there are no vehicles or horse carriages because the road is inaccessible, bad and muddy,” the women lamented. This challenging situation makes life very difficult, but these developments have brought renewed hope to the people of Kuntaur. The road under construction will cover over 16 kilometres from Wassu through Jakaba, Kuntaur, Niani, Sukuta, to Barajally Tenda.In Nyanga Bantang, located in Niani District, community elders, including the Alkalolu and Imams of Bagadaji, Jailan, and Safalu, attended the historic ceremony, which will see the construction of a 10.8-kilometre road from Nyanga Bantang to Bagadaji. Similar to other communities, residents are celebrating this development, considering it the “beginning of a new chapter in their lives.” Aja Nanding Jabbie, a resident of Bagadaji, described the road as the “single biggest development that has the potential to open up the village to the outside world.”President Barrow concluded the event by placing the last stone at Wassu for the 10-kilometre road to Kataba Omar Ndaw and Kataba Serign, bringing the total road construction to nearly 50 kilometres in the Central River Region North. Similar activities are planned for the Central River Region South.

PRESIDENT BARROW LAUNCHES DRIVE FOR 1500KM OF ROADS AS WULI RALLIES BEHIND HIM

On the sidelines of his provincial tour where he laid the foundation stone for the construction of nearly 800km of feeder roads in the Upper River Region, President H.E Adama Barrow held a meeting in Wuli Foday Kunda to raise awareness on his "connect Gambia infrastructure projects " which seeks to construct 1500km of roads across the country. The initiative, which underscores his commitment to infrastructural development seeks to link remote communities, enhance access and spur economic growth. Outside the village, residents kept a carnival atmosphere welcoming the motorcade with much fanfare and excitement. The President arrived at a heroes' reception with residents flooding the meeting grounds for yet another show of support and appreciation for his massive development efforts that have transformed this region.The Alkalo of Foday Kunda Hameh Singhateh set the stage by acknowledging the tremendous impact of these projects on the lives of the people. “Wuli had been one of the most disadvantaged regions in the past, but thanks to President Barrow,  the road has been constructed to standard and this has made travel easier.” The next phase of these developments,  Alkalo Singhateh added,  has truly shown President Barrow's “approach to development as more than just lip service.”  He thanked the Gambian leader for the bold initiative,  noting that the construction of these feeder roads will further “empower rural communities.”These sentiments were shared by Nafa Jabai who enumerated the numerous development projects undertaken by President Barrow over the last 9 years. From road infrastructure,  health care, and education to Agriculture,  Mr Jabai noted that President Barrow has already “left his mark and cemented his legacy” as one of the most progressive leaders in The Gambia's history. He recalled the difficulties communities endured in the past when access to these areas was virtually impossible due to the bad road conditions.Saikouna Bajaha, a prominent NPP member from Bajaha Kunda argued that Wuli owes President Barrow a “debt of gratitude” for his “unprecedented developments that have improved the lives of the people.” The road projects in the region,  Mr Bajaha noted, have opened up the region and provided a vital link to the main provincial town of Basse. He called on the people to “register for the upcoming election and vote massively for President Barrow,”  to enable him to continue more impactful developments.Several other speakers, such as Mamadou Jallow, the President of the livestock owners association, Jainaba Sowe and Fatumata Saho, the women representatives, acknowledged the impact of President Barrow's developments across the country and reassured him of their votes to secure another mandate. The Chairman of the Basse Area Council, Muhammed Ceesay, spoke of the difficult days in the past when the only means of access in the area was motorbike transport. This state of affairs,  Ceesay added meant “limited opportunities for communities who endured hours on dusty roads and unreliable ferry services.” With the advent of the Barrow government,  the area council Chairman noted communities now have “access to electricity, water and roads.” He reassured President Barrow that the region is “politically secure for the NPP,”  predicting a landslide victory for the party.This assessment was shared by the National Assembly Member Honourable Ebrima Jaiteh who described the 400km road projects as “unprecedented.” He described Barrow as the right man for the job as he delivers development that is both impactful and inclusive.Governor Samba Bah of the Upper River Region, urged unity amongst the people to empower President Barrow as he undertakes another ambitious chapter of infrastructural development. He also thanked the women and youth for their support, urging them to nurture peace and stability.The Minister of Musa Drammeh advised communities to “abandon the opposition as they offer no meaningful development to the people.” He reminded them of the President's development track record over the last 9 years and appealed for more support to enable him to continue for another five years.The meeting also witnessed the defection of several people who claimed to be members of the opposition into the ranks of the ruling National People's Party. They were formally introduced by the firebrand NPP militant Du Sano who has been very influential in dismantling the opposition's support in the Upper River Region.The meeting climaxed with President Barrow's address in which he spoke of Barrow Kunda as the cradle of his political rise. He described the meeting as a homecoming that reminded him of the history in which he forged a solid political path that has now made him a great politician in The Gambia.He, however, reminded Wuli of the past difficult periods of their lives when they lacked basic road infrastructure and struggled to commute to Basse. “Now you have first-class roads that have opened up your communities,”  President Barrow told his audience.The President used the platform to attack his opponents,  dismissing the idea of a coalition as “unworkable” and only “intended to propel his political godfather to power.”He appealed to the masses not to “trade the NPP for any opposition political party,” as he is “development-oriented and focused on the bigger picture.” He concluded by calling for peace,  tolerance and restraint amongst his supporters,  before finally making one bold prediction that he will defeat the opposition if they form a coalition against him.

PRESIDENT BARROW LAUNCHES 85KM ROAD PROJECT IN URR TO CONNECT 22 REMOTE COMMUNITIES

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the construction of 85 km of roads in three districts of the Upper River Region. The "Connect Gambia infrastructure projects," as it is dubbed, aims to build strategic feeder roads across 22 settlements in Tumana, Jimara, and Kantora, as part of the government's drive to decentralise development and reach remote communities.The President launched the "Connect Gambia infrastructure project" at Julangel, laying the foundation stone for an 11.2 km road linking Mankamang Kunda, Julangel, Sare Musa, Sare Wollom, and Banna Tenda, all in Jimara. The project will transform the dusty road, which serves as vital access for residents struggling to reach the main road.This development has already stirred excitement among residents living in these villages, such as Bully Jaiteh, a 73-year-old resident of Julangel, who describes it as “transformative and progressive.”Bully Camara owns a tricycle, which he uses to traverse these villages and transport goods. He believes this new road will have a positive impact on young people like him, as it reduces maintenance costs and expands accessibility. He is grateful to the President for this intervention, which now brings development home.The President made a brief stop at the Dampha Kunda-Tambasansang road to assess progress. He stated that roads are very important and that his government is “exploiting innovative financing strategies” to deliver its ambitious projects.President Barrow further stated that these projects mark the beginning of a 1,500-kilometre road programme, and that once completed, “the Gambia will have become a middle-income economy.”He also visited the Governor's residence and office complex in Basse, which is undergoing vital infrastructural improvements to align with modern standards as part of the government's decentralisation strategy.Another strategically important road is the 23.2 km route from Kaba Kama in Basse, passing through several villages to Giroba in Fulladu East. This road is virtually inaccessible during the rainy season when it becomes inundated with floodwaters. Residents describe this as the biggest development they could imagine in their lifetime.For the young and old, men and women, the laying of the foundation stone for this project represents a historic opportunity that will change lives and establish a corridor to end their isolation during the rains.Momodou Camara, who is physically challenged, shares that, like other residents, the road conditions during the rainy season are his biggest nightmare as he becomes virtually grounded and unable to move around. This proposed project offers a new chance for him to go about his life unimpeded.Further down in Bassending, Modou Lamin Joof is already celebrating, standing on a part of the road that he says turns into a swamp from July to November, when his motorbike is his only means of transport.In Suduwol, the President received an enthusiastic welcome from the residents, who celebrated as he laid the foundation stone for the 24 km road to the border settlement of Nyamanari through Missira Ba Mariama.This road holds strategic significance, as it is the main corridor for vehicular traffic to the sub-region. Every day, hundreds of vehicles travel this route as they enter or leave The Gambia en route to Senegal, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone. Consequently, its construction will enhance The Gambia's position as a hub for sub-regional trade. Such development, residents believe, will create opportunities for Gambians, boost trade, and facilitate movement.Overall, the people of Suduwol and the wider district of Kantora have expressed their gratitude to the President for this bold initiative, which demonstrates his personal commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Gambians.Similar scenes were repeated in Tinkinjo, a small community just a few kilometres from the Basse Fatoto Highway. The President, accompanied by officials, laid the foundation stone marking the official start of nearly 27 km of road linking Tinkinjo, Sanunding, Dingiring, Madina Samako, and Diabugu Ba Sillah.These feeder roads connecting off-road communities are regarded as revolutionary by residents, who for the first time feel their impact. Roads are seen as the missing link in the development paradigm that has already seen the provision of electricity, water, schools, and health facilities.

PRESIDENT BARROW COMMISSIONS 12KM BRUFUT-MADIANA ROAD, ENDING DECADES OF ISOLATION IN KOMBO SOUTH

The President H.E Adama Barrow, on Saturday, commissioned the 12km Brufut-Madiana, Banyaka-Kunkujang, Mariama-Tujereng road at a grand ceremony held at the Madiana football grounds. The road is part of his administration's efforts to improve connectivity, support economic transformation, expand access to services, and strengthen rural communities. The construction of this vital road ends decades of isolation and deprivation for residents in the area.A warm reception was organised for President HE Adama Barrow and the First Lady Fatumata Bah Barrow upon their arrival for the inauguration of the 12km road linking Brufut, Madiana, Banyaka, Kunkujang, Mariama, and Tujereng. Thousands of residents from these settlements gathered at the Madiana school grounds to witness this historic occasion.This road is one of the most strategic in Kombo South, providing access to 80,000 people who commute daily to urban centres.For the residents here, its construction is a “dream come true” and the “beginning of a new life” after decades of isolation.The Alkalo of Madiana, Sanusi Manneh, expressed joy and happiness following this project. He noted that residents struggled to travel between Madiana and Brufut, especially during the rainy season when floods, mud, and potholes made passage impossible.Junkung Badjie, the Village Development Committee Chairman, recalled that passage through this road was “virtually impossible due to its bad state.” “Now we can move with ease at any time of the year thanks to the intervention of the President,” Junkung added.“The benefits this road brings to these communities are immeasurable,” said Sally Camara, the women's representative, noting that women “endured untold difficulties in the past to make the 10-minute journey to Brufut or Serekunda to access markets, health facilities, schools and other services.”On behalf of all the women in the area, Sally conveyed profound gratitude to President Barrow for bringing infrastructural development to ordinary people. She challenged the people of Kombo South, particularly women, to “vote for the President as a gesture of gratitude.”Other speakers, including the regional chairman of the West Coast Region, Lamin Jamba Jammeh; the chief of Sanimentereng, Momodou Bojang; and the Governor of the West Coast Region, Ousman Bojang, highlighted the importance of road infrastructure in unlocking the region’s economic potential, noting that roads “connect communities and people, and also enhance access to markets and services.”For a region rich in agriculture, fishing, mining, and tourism, the speakers expressed optimism that this development would “significantly impact the economy, create employment opportunities, and empower women and youth.” They also urged the communities to safeguard the road and ensure its durability, safety, and sustainability.Director General of the National Roads Authority, Sulayman Sumareh, disclosed that the government initially planned a “targeted intervention at the Madiana bridge but later decided to construct the 12km road after the President issued a directive to cover the entire stretch from Brufut to Tujereng.”The ceremony also saw the defection of 148 people from the opposition to the NPP, a development organisers described as a significant blow to their base in Kombo South. The construction of this strategic road has convinced many, especially opposition members, that President Barrow is committed to development and progress.In his inauguration address, President Barrow described the event as a “historic milestone that underscores his government's commitment to inclusive development,” stating that the road will transform the lives and livelihoods of the people of Brufut, Madiana, Banyaka, Kunkujang Mariama, Tujereng, and beyond.The President reaffirmed that “infrastructural development remains the core priority of his government,” as outlined in the recovery-focused National Development Plan YIRIWA, which emphasises that “roads are indispensable in the quest for sustained socio-economic growth.”He reassured Gambians that “the government will continue to fund projects from local resources as a means to promote self-reliance and drive development.” He called on all stakeholders, including communities, drivers, and commuters, to take good care of this national asset to ensure it serves its intended purpose.The President dismissed criticism of his infrastructural initiatives, which aim to empower communities, describing the opposition as “desperate and lacking in focus.”He vowed to “defeat them massively in the December election,” adding that “Gambians appreciate his development efforts” which have impacted every community across the country. Barrister Martin Hackett was appointed to this role by the President, acting under the authority granted by the Special Prosecutor Act.His appointment represents a significant step towards justice for the victims of the 22 years of severe human rights abuses under former President Yahya Jammeh's regime.Mr Hackett has an extensive career in international and criminal law, specialising in cases involving genocide and counter-terrorism.Having taken his oaths of office, allegiance and secrecy, he will lead the Special Prosecutor's Office to seek justice for the victims of abuses during the Jammeh era.Mr Hackett fully understands the weight of this responsibility, which he describes as a “process that will put victims, survivors, and communities at the centre.” He has pledged to ensure that the process will be "independent, impartial, and respect the rule of law."He expressed gratitude to the President, the Attorney General, and the Independent Selection Panel for their trust and confidence, committing to carry out his duties to the best of his ability.President H.E. OUTGOING UNFPA REP, US EMBASSY DELEGATION MEET VP JALLOW AT STATE HOUSE

The Vice President, His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, hosted a meeting at State House with the UNFPA Country Representative, Ndéye Rose Sarr, along with a delegation from the U.S. Embassy in Banjul and Catholic Relief Services.As she approaches the conclusion of her four-year term as the UNFPA Country Representative in The Gambia, Ndéye Rose Sarr was the first to arrive at the Vice President's office for what may be her final visit in this capacity.After a closed-door meeting, Sarr explained that her purpose was to bid farewell to Vice President Jallow, as she will soon be departing from The Gambia. “I came to see the Vice President to say goodbye, to discuss programs, and to thank him for his support and leadership,” she stated.The outgoing UNFPA representative reflected on her tenure, acknowledging both the challenges faced and the achievements accomplished. “One of our significant successes was finalising the 2024 Population and Housing Census, which was conducted digitally,” she mentioned. “We also developed a demographic dividend, established a demographic dividend observatory, and worked tirelessly to ensure that women and girls have access to reproductive health and rights,” she added.Following Sarr, a delegation from the U.S. Embassy in Banjul and Catholic Relief Services arrived. Their discussion with Vice President Jallow focused on the school feeding program in The Gambia, which is being implemented by the Gambian government in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Catholic Relief Services.U.S. Charge d'Affaires Eugene S. Young expressed that they had spoken about the success of the program and their collaboration with the Gambian government, as well as future plans for the initiative. He further praised the strong relationship between the U.S. and the Gambian government, stating that they aim to assist the Gambian government in taking full responsibility for the feeding program. “We want to support the Gambian government through CRS to reach a point where this initiative is entirely their responsibility. We are working towards that goal to help the government become self-sustaining,” he emphasised.The U.S. government, through the Department of Agriculture, is investing $28 million in the first phase of a five-year school feeding program, which is expected to continue until 2027.

PRESIDENT BARROW RECEIVES €5M FIRE EQUIPMENT DONATION FOR GAMBIA FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, on Thursday received firefighting equipment and other assorted materials worth five million euros for immediate distribution to the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services at a ceremony held at the State House.The equipment was donated by a Spanish NGO, "Start Up," which has longstanding ties with Gambia's security services, to strengthen the fire and rescue services and enable them to respond more effectively to emergencies.The equipment includes trucks, fire-fighting machinery, tanks, utility vehicles, hoses, welding machines, and bushfire-fighting tools.This firefighting equipment forms part of a long-standing partnership between the NGO 'Start Up," led by Sonia, and Gambia's security services, initiated in 2023.Sonia Sona Mariama, the president of the Star Up NGO, is explaining the functions of the donated equipment to the President H.E Adama Barrow. VP JALLOW OPENS SCHOOL FEEDING FORUM, HIGHLIGHTS MASSIVE BUDGET INCREASE

The Vice President, His Excellency Mohammed B.S Jallow, has deputised the President, H.E. Adama Barrow, at the stakeholder engagement on the National School Feeding Forum at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre. The forum that aims to allow stakeholders to discuss the gains and challenges made so far in the school feeding initiative was attended by cabinet ministers, development partners, and key stakeholders in the education sector. Themed on Food for Education: Improving child health and educational outcomes, the initiative by the Gambia government through the Basic and Secondary Education ministry and their partners (CRS, USDA & Caritas) seeks to improve literacy rates, health and nutrition outcomes, all geared toward ensuring that children are supported and empowered to thrive in school. Delivering a statement on behalf of President Adama Barrow, Vice President Mohammed B.S Jallow said the government has demonstrated a strong commitment towards the school feeding programme with increased investment. “Public investment in school feeding has increased from GMD 30 million in 2019 to GMD 250 million in 2025/2026—an eightfold increase. This reflects our determination to build a sustainable, nationally owned programme.”“However, to achieve universal coverage by 2030, we must scale up investments and innovate new financing models,” he said.Investing in children who remain the most valuable asset of the nation is considered a move toward setting national development foundations right. Vice President Jallow further highlighted the impacts of the school feeding programme.“The impact of school feeding on education outcomes is both clear and compelling, and between 2021-2025, enrolment has increased by 17.2% and 10.4% for ECD and LBS respectively and total nationwide increase by 14.8%.”“More importantly, retention and completion rates are improving, particularly among vulnerable populations,” VP Jallow said.Dr Habibatou Drammeh, Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, commended the government for supporting the programme she described as a vital link in the education sector. “School feeding can catalyse broader socio-economic development, linking classrooms to farms and education outcomes to livelihoods.”“Equally significant is the strong and growing commitment of the government to financing the school feeding program over the years,” she said. Partners like the US government are key allies of the Gambia government in this initiative, for they provide vital support. Eugene Young,  US Charge d'Affaires in the Gambia, said the US and the Gambia share a mutual interest in the welfare of children. “This kind of partnership, which is practical and results-driven and focused on outcomes is exactly how the United States approaches development cooperation today.” “The United States and The Gambia shared mutual interest in seeing Gambian children well nourished, well educated, and prepared to build the future of this country,” he stated.This transformative programme targeting over 63,000 children across 186 schools will provide daily nutritious school meals, educational materials, and capacity building for teachers and communities. What started around 1970 as a donor support programme is now a fully government-controlled programme.

PRESIDENT BARROW PERFORMS UMRAH IN HOLY CITY OF MAKKAH

His Excellency President Adama Barrow and his delegation have arrived in the Holy City of Makkah from Medina to perform Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage.Dressed in Ihram, a symbol of purity and humility, the President and his delegation travelled to Makkah aboard a two-hour train journey to Islam’s holiest city.Consular Ebou Ndure said the trip to Makkah marks the climax of the President’s spiritual journey, which has so far included visits to the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Masjid al-Quba, and the Mountains of Uhud.Inside the VIP coach, the atmosphere was calm and reflective, filled with religious chants as the President reaffirmed his intention to perform Umrah in accordance with Islamic teachings and traditions.On arrival in Makkah, President Barrow was received by officials from the Royal Palace and escorted to the Royal Guest House overlooking the Holy Kaaba.Shortly after, he was led to Masjid Al-Haram to begin the Umrah rites. The President first performed Maghrib prayers at the Holy Kaaba alongside members of his delegation.He then proceeded to perform Tawaf, circling the Holy Kaaba seven times, aboard specially designated vehicles reserved for heads of state and dignitaries.Following Tawaf, President Barrow performed Sa’i, walking between Safa and Marwa. The nearly 2km journey, completed seven times, relives the footsteps of Hajara, wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who made the same trek in search of water for her son, Prophet Ismail.After completing all prescribed rituals, the President returned to the Kaaba to perform Ishaa congregational prayers, marking the conclusion of the Umrah rites.President Barrow was later escorted back to the Royal Guest House. He is expected to travel to Jeddah for a series of engagements, including a meeting with members of the Gambian community in Saudi Arabia.

President Adama Barrow on Friday received a high-level delegation from the African Development Bank Group, led by its President Dr Sidi Ould Tah, at State House. The two sides reviewed the existing partnership between The Gambia and the AfDB and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, electricity, and other priority development areas.Dr Ould Tah was accompanied to the State House by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Sidi Keita. Speaking to reporters after the talks, the AfDB President expressed appreciation to President Barrow for The Gambia’s strong support to the Bank and for the “fruitful partnership over the years.”Dr Ould Tah reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to continue supporting The Gambia to deliver on key sectors and projects aimed at improving the quality of life and livelihoods of citizens. He commended The Gambia under President Barrow’s leadership for its “impressive performance” in economic management, domestic resource mobilisation, and reforms of key state institutions.“We also congratulated the Gambian leader on the country’s microfinance performance, growth, domestic resource mobilisation, and reforms related to state enterprises and procurement,” Dr Ould Tah said. “The Gambian Leader gave us clear direction on the priorities of his government and his development vision for the country. Over 730 young women graduate from SWEDD+ entrepreneurship training and receive D50,000 – D75,000 business grantsPresident Adama Barrow has said no country can realise its full potential without investing in women and girls, as The Gambia certified 730 beneficiaries under the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend Plus Project, SWEDD+. Speaking at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, the President said families thrive and communities grow stronger when women are supported. The ceremony recognised women and girls aged 15-24 who completed a three-month entrepreneurship training program under SWEDD+, implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare.The five-year project targets out-of-school women and girls to improve livelihoods, skills, and economic independence.A total of D117 million has been earmarked for more than 2,000 young women under the project. For this first cohort of over 700 graduands, each will receive between D50,000 and D75,000 in business grants.The Ministry has set aside D32 million to be disbursed directly to the new graduates to start or expand their businesses. Cheques and certificates were presented to regional representatives at the event.Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare described the event as a “milestone” toward economic independence for beneficiaries. He commended President Barrow for advancing gender equality, noting that the skills gained will “open doors” for the graduates.Alpha Humma, Project Manager for the Women Enterprise Fund, said the training will enable graduands to contribute meaningfully to society. He confirmed the D32 million grant facility to support business start-ups.World Bank Representative Franklin Mutahakana said entrepreneurship training helps break barriers that limit women and girls. “This program gives young women more economic uplift,” he said, and reaffirmed the Bank’s support for The Gambia’s women’s empowerment agenda.Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Kaddy Balajo thanked the President, the Ministry of Gender, and the World Bank. “Women and girls are not mere beneficiaries of development, but partners,” she said. “The skills, knowledge, and grants we have received will transform our lives.”In his keynote, President Barrow congratulated the graduands and said investing in human capital through SWEDD+ is critical for sustainable growth.He urged beneficiaries to use the grants wisely and serve as inspiration to others. FIVE STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES HAND OVER D137 MILLION IN DIVIDENDS TO PRESIDENT BARROW

Five state-owned enterprises, SOEs, handed over cheques totalling D137 million in dividend payments to President H.E. Adama Barrow at a ceremony held at State House on Tuesday. The unprecedented development marks a milestone in government-SOE relations, following reforms aimed at making the enterprises more profitable, better managed, and financially viable.For the first time in The Gambia’s history, SOEs lined up at State House not to request bailouts, but to return dividends worth over D130 million to the President.Board chairpersons, managing directors, and officials of the State-Owned Enterprises Commission gathered in the Cabinet Room to witness the ceremony. The five SOEs and their contributions were:1. Gambia Ports Authority: D70 million.2. Gambia National Petroleum Corporation: D50 million.3. Gambia Civil Aviation Authority: D5 million.4. Gambia Publishing and Printing Corporation: D5 million.5. The Gambia Radio and Television Services: D2 million.Chief of Staff to the President, Alieu Loum, who chaired the event, described it as unique. “The SOEs have fulfilled their obligations to government and to Gambians,” he said.The Chairman of the SOE Commission, Ousainou Ngum, said since the commission’s establishment three years ago, there has been remarkable improvement in the operations, management, and performance of state enterprises. He expressed hope that this transformation will continue, starting with this first dividend payment. Ngum also commended President Barrow for his leadership, oversight, and support to the commission and SOEs.In his keynote address, President Barrow described the ceremony as historic, noting it marks a turnaround for SOEs that, until 2024, were running a combined net loss of D2.4 billion. He attributed the performance to his government’s deliberate, sustained, and evidence-driven reform agenda focused on governance, accountability, and performance management.The President praised the SOE Commission for transforming public perception of state institutions and promoting efficiency. However, he urged all stakeholders to build on these achievements to address challenges affecting growth, liquidity, and profitability.President Barrow also reassured Gambians that the government will continue robust measures to end recurrent power cuts. He noted that NAWEC has improved its financial performance, enabling investment in the energy sector.He concluded by urging all SOEs to maintain the momentum, as the government remains committed to building efficient, functional, and robust state enterprises that deliver for the Gambian people.
