CEPRASS releases results of opinion polls on National Assembly elections

The Center for Policy, Research, and Strategic Studies CEPRASS in partnership with the national endowment for democracy on Wednesday convened a day's opinion sharing session. The study on the country’s post-presidential election was shared with journalists, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. The forum was held in Bakau. Speaking at the gathering CEPRASS executive director Lamin Dampha gave a background of the project and said opinion polls are useful in making decisions on critical issues. The president of Gambia Press Union Muhammed MS Bah dilated on the importance of media in the dissemination of results on opinion polls.The polls can be accessed on the CEPRASS website: www.ceprass.gm

President Barrow Declares Public Holiday for National Assembly Elections

President Adama Barrow has approved the Independent Electoral Commission’s request to declare Saturday, 9th April 2022, as a Public Holiday throughout the country for the upcoming National Assembly Election. The approval was granted to allow all registered voters to vote in their respective constituencies.

MoBSE introduces virtual classrooms in 37 School

Thirty-seven schools across the country have been introduced to virtual classes that allow students to access lessons through SD Card using Android Phones and Windows Computers. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education says the offline e-learning platform is a pilot program for schools in rural Gambia and is targeting students in the Upper Basic School (Grades 7, 8, and 9). The aim is to provide students with supplementary learning materials as well as to keep them busy while they are at home. The beneficiary schools are from communities that do not have access to good mobile networks, or the internet or are challenged with poor radio and television signals. The Ministry said the deployment of SD Cards in schools will continue as many other schools are expected to benefit from this initiative.

Brikama Area Council to distribute food to refugees and internally displaced people in Foni

The Brikama Area Council (BAC) says it will on Thursday 7th April 2022 embark on food distribution to refugees and internally displaced people in Foni. The council announced that 650 bags [25kg] will be distributed to victims of the ongoing Casamance conflict. The gesture is in response to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the armed conflict that caused a massive internal displacement of people living around the border and interior of Foni.

Transport fares to increase from Monday 11th April, 2022

The Government of The Gambia has approved the agreements for the increment of transport fares in all the approved routes nationwide.  The implementation of the agreement will begin on Monday 11th April 2022. The agreement also includes the Introduction of route licensing/permit, the reduction of tariffs at the Sene-Gambia Bridge, and introducing of the queuing system at the Port of Banjul.A statement from the Ministry of transport says the objective of the agreement reached with the Transport Union is to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods in the country and beyond. Transport operators plying route(s) covered in the route licensing scheme are urged to register free of charge at various garages across the Greater Banjul Area and West Coast Region on or before Monday 11th April 2022.

REPGam project asses energy needs for communities

Officials of REPGam project on Monday began data collection in beneficiary communities including institutions to assess the energy needs before the implementation of the project later this year. The delegation visited Ndemban Technical and Vocational education centre in the west coast region where the ministry of Higher education research science and technology plans to transform the centre to a full fledged Vocational training facility. The REPGam project is working on implementing solar power supply in 26 beneficiaries including communities and institutions. The delegation comprising technicians from various stakeholders examine the geographic cordinates of the facility for adequate and proper installation of solar power systems. Speaking to GRTS, the deputy director of the REPGam project Dr Ebrima Sonko explains the modality of the project saying SUN Farming a German company is contracted to install the solar system in all the beneficiary communities. He said the project will reduce the country's dependency of fossil fuel as well as complement goverment's efforts in providing clean affordable and reliable energy supply. Dr Sonko said the centre has the potential to accommodate different areas of discipline in Vocational education and training thus significant amount of energy supply will be required. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research who are supporting African countries to fight the impact of climate change through renewable sources of energy. The team will proceed to Bansang General hospital for a similar exercise.

BERLIN ENERGY DIALOGUE FORUM DISCUSSED GLOBAL ENERGY POLICY AND CLIMATE ACTION

At  the 8th Berlin Energy Dialogue Forum which is happening at the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, experts renewed calls for more action in relation to embracing renewable energy as a solution to climate change and their related mishaps. They include UN secretary general, Antonio Gutares and Annalena Baerbock, Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs who called for reduction in global emissions. The UN chief also stated that the world needs to fix the problem of it's global energy mix. For individuals such as Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, renewable energy sources are the answer to both the climate and energy crisis.At a time when the crisis in Ukraine is taking toll on the global energy and economy, the 8th edition of the energy conclave attracted experts, politicians, business leaders and journalists from across the globe to discuss the future of energy policy and climate action for a better world.

GERMAN FOUNDATION (DSIK) SIGNS MOU WITH NACCUG AND TWO OTHER UNIONSGerman

 Foundation for International Cooperation (DSIK) sings a memorandum of understanding with National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia (NACCUG), Gambia Police Force Cooperative Credit Union and Medical and Health Credit Union. As per the memorandum, the two credit unions will benefit from a project grant of 2.7 million Dalasi. Aside from providing NACCUG with technical assistance, its general manager, Foday Sanyang said the idea is to enhance small and medium enterprises of credit union members.DSIK country representative pictured the project as special. Gabriele Freigrau v. dem Bussce talked of the project's specialty in the sense that it does not focus on collateral as a benchmark for loans. The board vice-chairman of Medical and Health Credit Union Abdul Aziz Ceesay said it is important that they are a chosen pilot to propagate entrepreneurship amongst credit unionists. Pa Singhateh equally portrayed the grant as a financial facility that will be beneficial to members since it will scale up thier business.The financial enhancement is expected to last for a year with possible extension in time and beneficiaries.

Over a hundred youths complete Youth Service Scheme

134 youth were on Tuesday sworn in as Corp members of the National Youth Service Scheme two-year skills acquisition training program. This is the 14th  badge of the scheme since it's establishment in 1996 and it comprises of young men and women including hard of hearing. The Swearing in ceremony led by Justice idrissa F Mbai is part of the fundamental activities of the scheme for the youth to take an oath of service to Nation. Speaking at the event Gibril ngorr Secka said the scheme is a government founded program aimed at enhancing the skills of young people for employment and economic growth. Mr Ismaila Ceesay the CEO of insight Training Center spoke of the importance of a skillful youth population in national development.The Board Chairperson of NYSS Alhagie Kebbeh assured of NYSS and government’s commitment to an all inclusive youth empowerment  program.The Executive Director of NYSS Emmanuel Mendy discussed the components of the orientation program.Several other speakers including one Corp member Ida Njie thanked government and the NYSS for the initiative saying it will enable them to get employment and contribute meaningfully to National development Participants are now set to undergo a two-year skills training program in different professional areas.

Gambia Narrowly go through to AFCON 2023 Qualifiers

Assan Ceesay scores a brace as the the Gambia stumbled to is to the final round of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.  The Gambia won 3-2 on aggregate over Chad after two legs. Chad nearly ended The Gambia's dream as they led the game to the dying minutes before Assan Ceesay equalising through a penalty. Despite a 2-2 draw at their temporary home in Agadir, Morocco, the Scorpions 1-0 win in the first leg in Cameroon decided  the tie.

President Barrow Promises electricity and water supply to Kerr Layen

Continuing his tour in the Central River Region South, President Adama Barrow held meetings in Kerr Layen, Dalaba, and Sinchu Alaji all in the Niaminas. At the meetings, the President renewed his commitment to the socio-economic development of the CRR with emphasis on road infrastructure, education, healthcare, electricity and water for rural communities. The president also galvanised support for NPP candidates and called on people to vote for them. President Barrow finally thanked the people of Kerr Layen for the turnout and promised to provide them with electricity and water. The President and entourage proceeded to Dalaba in Niamina West where he also thanked the people for their continued support for the NPP. Other speakers during the rallies were Tourism Minister Hamat Bah, NPP candidates from the various constituencies, and a host of other politicians.

Three more candidates pull out of the race to the national Assembly

Three more candidates have withdrawn from the upcoming national assembly elections barely a fortnight before the polls. The Independent Electoral Commission on Monday announced that Mustapha S Cham, the PDOIS candidate for Lower Saloum, Selou Bah, the Independent candidate for Upper Saloum, and Malick Jassey, the Independent candidate for Lower Saloum have all withdrawn. The IEC has since accepted their withdrawals.The IEC also announced that by-elections will be held in four wards in the Kanifing and Brikama administrative areas.  On Saturday 14th May by-elections will be held in Bundung Six Junction, London Corner, Sanyang, and Marakissa. Nomination of candidates for the by-elections will be conducted from 25th to 29 April between 8 am and 4 pm at the respective IEC Regional Offices in Brikama and Kanifing.

PRESIDENT BARROW RECEIVES €5M FIRE EQUIPMENT DONATION FOR GAMBIA FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, on Thursday received firefighting equipment and other assorted materials worth five million euros for immediate distribution to the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services at a ceremony held at the State House.The equipment was donated by a Spanish NGO, "Start Up," which has longstanding ties with Gambia's security services, to strengthen the fire and rescue services and enable them to respond more effectively to emergencies.The equipment includes trucks, fire-fighting machinery, tanks, utility vehicles, hoses, welding machines, and bushfire-fighting tools.This firefighting equipment forms part of a long-standing partnership between the NGO 'Start Up," led by Sonia, and Gambia's security services, initiated in 2023.Sonia Sona Mariama, the president of the Star Up NGO, is explaining the functions of the donated equipment to the President H.E Adama Barrow. (PC: State House)However, this donation is the largest since the partnership began and is poised to significantly enhance operations at the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, which handles emergency rescue situations involving fires and bushfires, among others.The President expressed his high appreciation for this recent donation, believing it highlights the importance of the partnership with the Spanish NGO.He described the Fire and Rescue Services as a vital part of the National Security apparatus and stated that this intervention will greatly bolster their capacity to respond to emergencies, especially in densely populated areas.This consignment also includes a 12,000-litre capacity tank, the largest in the GFRS inventory. LADY SARJO MOBILIZES HUNDREDS AT STATE HOUSE, VOWS TO LEAD PRESIDENT BARROW’S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Hundreds of members of the Lady Sarjo Mballow Barrow fans club visited her on Wednesday to show their support for her and President Adama Barrow at State House.The members represent numerous clubs across the country, which have adopted Lady Sarjo as their Honorary Mother in recognition of her contributions to national development and for serving as a positive example for women and girls.The purpose of the meeting was to introduce her to the members and their activities, and also to establish common ground as the political climate heats up ahead of the upcoming election later this year.The main organiser of this gathering is Sidi Dem, a prominent figure within political circles, known for his unwavering support and loyalty to President Barrow.Dem expressed gratitude to the members for responding to calls on short notice, describing it as “evidence of the love and affection” Gambians have for Lady Sarjo.He challenged all fan club members to rally behind President Barrow so that he can secure re-election with a comfortable majority. Dem also urged the women to engage with their constituents to increase political support for the President.This sentiment was echoed by regional representatives of the Lady Sarjo Fans club from the Upper River, West Coast, and North Bank regions. VP JALLOW OPENS SCHOOL FEEDING FORUM, HIGHLIGHTS MASSIVE BUDGET INCREASE

The Vice President, His Excellency Mohammed B.S Jallow, has deputised the President, H.E. Adama Barrow, at the stakeholder engagement on the National School Feeding Forum at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre. The forum that aims to allow stakeholders to discuss the gains and challenges made so far in the school feeding initiative was attended by cabinet ministers, development partners, and key stakeholders in the education sector. Themed on Food for Education: Improving child health and educational outcomes, the initiative by the Gambia government through the Basic and Secondary Education ministry and their partners (CRS, USDA & Caritas) seeks to improve literacy rates, health and nutrition outcomes, all geared toward ensuring that children are supported and empowered to thrive in school. Delivering a statement on behalf of President Adama Barrow, Vice President Mohammed B.S Jallow said the government has demonstrated a strong commitment towards the school feeding programme with increased investment. “Public investment in school feeding has increased from GMD 30 million in 2019 to GMD 250 million in 2025/2026—an eightfold increase. This reflects our determination to build a sustainable, nationally owned programme.”“However, to achieve universal coverage by 2030, we must scale up investments and innovate new financing models,” he said.Investing in children who remain the most valuable asset of the nation is considered a move toward setting national development foundations right. Vice President Jallow further highlighted the impacts of the school feeding programme.“The impact of school feeding on education outcomes is both clear and compelling, and between 2021-2025, enrolment has increased by 17.2% and 10.4% for ECD and LBS respectively and total nationwide increase by 14.8%.”“More importantly, retention and completion rates are improving, particularly among vulnerable populations,” VP Jallow said.Dr Habibatou Drammeh, Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, commended the government for supporting the programme she described as a vital link in the education sector. “School feeding can catalyse broader socio-economic development, linking classrooms to farms and education outcomes to livelihoods.”“Equally significant is the strong and growing commitment of the government to financing the school feeding program over the years,” she said. Partners like the US government are key allies of the Gambia government in this initiative, for they provide vital support. Eugene Young,  US Charge d'Affaires in the Gambia, said the US and the Gambia share a mutual interest in the welfare of children. “This kind of partnership, which is practical and results-driven and focused on outcomes is exactly how the United States approaches development cooperation today.” “The United States and The Gambia shared mutual interest in seeing Gambian children well nourished, well educated, and prepared to build the future of this country,” he stated.This transformative programme targeting over 63,000 children across 186 schools will provide daily nutritious school meals, educational materials, and capacity building for teachers and communities. What started around 1970 as a donor support programme is now a fully government-controlled programme.

PRESIDENT BARROW INAUGURATES LANDS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSIONS TO TACKLE DISPUTES, BOOST DECENTRALISATION

The President, His Excellency Adama Barrow, on Monday presided over the inauguration and swearing-in of members of the newly established Lands Commission and the Local Government Service Commission at a ceremony at State House.  The two Commissions, comprising veteran civil servants,  have the onerous task of strengthening land governance and management in the country as well as resolving disputes related to land. The Lands Commission is headed by Raymond Sock as Chairperson,  Kebba Njie, Babucarr Mbye, Abdoulie Manneh and  Juldeh Ceesay all as members. One after the other, they all took the two oaths of office and secrecy, conducted by the Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Momodou Dibba.They later signed the oath registry officially confirming their appointments. Four other officials were also sworn in to the newly established Local Government Service Commission. Former Police chief and Interior Minister Yankuba Sonko heads this Commission which also has Abdoulie Sallah, Saffie Lowe and Bahyda Hydara as members.They also took the prescribed oaths of office and secrecy,  before signing the oath book.Speaking on behalf of the two Commissions,  Raymond Sock expressed gratitude to the President for the trust and confidence reposed in them, and pledged to live up to expectations. The President described these vital institutions as “integral components of the governance process”  that will “reinforce and add value to the nation's land and local government structures.”He disclosed that the commission has a wide mandate which includes “modernising land records, resolving disputes,  promoting equitable access to land and aligning land management practices” with broader national development goals.On the creation of the local government service commission,  President Barrow said this Commission will “strengthen democracy and decentralisation” as it will operate at the level closest to the ordinary people.The President congratulated the Commissioners and thanked them for accepting this responsibility. As veteran civil servants who have served the government at the highest levels, President Barrow said the Commissioners have the “experience,  integrity and professionalism to deliver up to expectations.”He reassured that his government will give them all the support and encouragement to succeed,  and urged all stakeholders to work with the two Commissions to ensure “fair, impartial and equitable management of land.”

VP JALLOW LAUNCHES FSQA'S STRATEGIC PLAN 2026-2030

His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow, the Vice President, presided over the launch of the Food Safety and Quality Authority's (FSQA) Strategic Plan for 2026-2030 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo. This strategic plan outlines the Authority's vision, strategic priorities, and key interventions aimed at strengthening food safety and quality systems, enhancing regulatory effectiveness, and safeguarding public health in The Gambia over the medium term.The landmark event gathered key stakeholders from the government, development partners, and the private sector, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring that citizens have broad access to quality and safe food.Momodou Bah, the Director General of FSQA, explained that this initiative aims to meet the required standards while the FSQA continues to develop national regulations. “We have an Act from 2011, regulations started in 2021, a policy was established in 2024, and now we have developed a strategic plan in 2025. This progression sharpens our focus to ensure we are fulfilling the mandates of the government,” Bah stated.This marks the beginning of a transformative journey, as food safety regulations become increasingly important in ensuring the well-being of every individual.Dr Amadou Sowe, the FSQA Board Chair, emphasised that the successful implementation of the plan will require strong government support. “This ambition will demand sustained investment, strong political will, and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders. Strategic plans don’t implement themselves; they require leadership, discipline, resources, and collective ownership,” Dr Sowe remarked.Immaculada Roca i Cortés, the European Union Ambassador to The Gambia, reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting FSQA. She expressed satisfaction in contributing to a stronger regulatory framework, a more effective inspection and control system, and enhancing technical capabilities.Reports indicate that foodborne illnesses cause an estimated 137,000 deaths annually in Africa, with productivity losses exceeding $20 billion.Public Service Minister Baboucarr Bouy assured FSQA of their support as policymakers while urging all stakeholders to back this initiative. “I urge all stakeholders to rally behind FSQA and support the effective implementation of this Strategic Plan.
